Dear Friends,

The critical 2010 election may seem far off, but with Representative Jeff Mayes term-limited after three successful terms in the State House, we will be electing our next State Representative in less than a year.  We all know that these are challenging times for Michigan.  Clearly, we need both leadership and the ability to work with others to solve our State's problems.  We need cooperation and results, not excuses.

In my four terms as a County Commissioner, I have worked hard to provide this kind of leadership to the people of Bay County.  I want to continue to be a part of that process.  We need to create economic growth, bring jobs to our community and make sure that critical services like education remain a top priority, and we need to do this in a fiscally responsible manner.

Please join us on Thursday August 27th to discuss these issues and talk about the future of our great State!  An invitation is attached with further details.  Thank you very much for all of your support in the past.  I look forward to seeing you on the 27th.

Dear Friend,

I would like to thank you for your continued support. As you many know I have announced my candidacy for State Representative of the 96th District. My good friend Jeff Mayes, who currently holds the seat, must step down due to term limits. I realize that I have some big shoes to fill, but the people of the 96th District want and deserve Quality representation in Lansing, and I am confident that I am up to the task.

I grew up in Bangor Township and I am a proud graduate of John Glenn High School. My wife Judy and I have lived in Bay County all our lives. I have seen Bay County thrive, and lately, I have watched Bay County Struggle. I want to be your voice in Lansing so I can help build a brighter future for all of us-right here in Bay County.

My Campaign will focus primarily on the economy, education, health care and our quality of life. I am honored to have been elected to represent many of you for the last 71/2 years, first as a Bay City Commissioner and now as the Mayor of Bay City. It has not always been an easy job, but even on the toughest days, I have truly enjoyed working with, and for, all of you. Despite the economic struggles we are facing in Bay County and beyond, we have always remained true to our core values. We have never lost faith, and we have never wavered in our commitment to one another, and to this unique and beautiful place we call home. The road ahead may be difficult, but Bay County will continue to grow and prosper because the people of Bay County never give up without a fight. And as your next State Representative, I promise that I will never stop fighting for you.

As we embark on this new journey I hope that I can count on your continued support and friendship! I look forward to seeing you at my upcoming fundraiser.

Dear Friends,

This is an early notice to mark your calendar for the evening of Thursday August 27, 2009.  We will be having a fundraiser for the Friends of Brian Elder.  You will be receiving more information in the weeks to come.  The previous date conflicted with Congressman Dale Kildee's annual event in Genesee County.  Growing up in the Flint area, Dale is one of my political heroes (yes, there are actual heroes in politics), and I plan on attending Dale's party.

As I said before, we are facing difficult times both in Bay County and the State of Michigan as a whole.  In times like these, leadership, planning and the ability to actually implement solutions are more important than ever.  Over the last several years, I have worked hard to help provide just that kind of leadership to the people of Bay County.  I want to continue to be a part of that process in the future, helping to preserve the services our people want and deserve in a financially responsible manner.

Thank you very much for all of your support in the past.  I look forward to seeing you on August 27th.

Alma Wheeler Smith
From the Ann Arbor News:

State Rep. Alma Wheeler Smith, the long-time Ypsilanti-area Democrat, has announced that she is running for governor, according to a news release sent to The Ann Arbor News.

"Michigan is at a critical crossroads and it is going to take legislative knowledge, political savvy and a lot of hard work to make sure we emerge from this recession a stronger, economically diverse and dynamic State," Wheeler Smith wrote on her campaign Web site,
almaformichigan.com.

While the 2010 state election is still many months away, one candidate for Governor, Lt. Governor John Cherry, launched his campaign website earlier today. Following the launch the Lt. Governor sent out the following email message:

Dear Friend,

I wanted you to be one of the first to know the exciting news: the website for A Whole Lot of People Supporting John Cherry is now live at www.peopleforcherry.com!

I have enjoyed learning more about new technologies to make our government more transparent and open to citizens. Last year, I was the first Lt. Governor in the country to join Twitter, and have been active on Facebook for some time now. Ultimately, this is a website for you. To that end, you can submit photos and videos on our site, and we'll feature them. But, that's not all.

www.peopleforcherry.com also features:

   * A full blog, with all of my blog posts from the summer collected together. There are more posts to come, and I look forward to hearing your comments too!

   * A newsroom, where you'll find the latest news stories, including the recent endorsements by A Whole Lot of Democratic county party chairs, municipal officials, and county leaders

   * The ability to sign up for email news updates on the issues you care about, and to sign up to volunteer in your area

   * Posters and stickers to download and print

   * Widgets to bring our site directly to your Facebook, MySpace, iGoogle, or my Yahoo! account - or to any web page or blog you want

Of course, you'll also find my biography, videos, links to the social networks I'm on - and a whole lot more. I look forward to hearing your thoughts and ideas, because after all, this site is about you.

I am well aware that these are trying times we face in Michigan. For far too long, partisan bickering has plagued our state. We must come together to collectively work to solve these problems. This website is a strong tool to help develop and discuss common sense solutions that help people. I intend to use it for that purpose and I hope you will join me in that process. Together, we can make the changes that are needed in Michigan. Visit www.peopleforcherry.com, and let's get started.

Thanks,

John Cherry
Lt. Governor

State Representative Jeff Mayes is conducting a mailing on Saturday, March 21st at 12:00p.m. Volunteers are needed to help out. If you are interested, please stop by the IBEW hall around 12:00p.m. Food will be provided!

Dear friends,

39 years ago today, many of our heroes stood on the Edmund Pettis bridge in Selma, Alabama.   They stood boldly in the face of Alabama State Troopers to protect the right to vote for all American citizens.

The commitment and bravery of those citizens inspired me to dedicate my career to working to eliminate barriers to voting and preserve the integrity of our elections.  That’s why I’m announcing today that I am forming a committee to explore a run for Michigan Secretary of State in 2010.

I believe that with the right leadership, Michigan can become the national leader for ethical government and excellence in election administration. We need to put aside partisanship and implement common sense reforms that will help us promote fair elections.  And with your help, we can build a campaign focused on doing just that.

Please visit our website, www.VoteBenson.com and get involved.  Make a contribution.  Volunteer to host a house party.  Share an idea on how we can improve elections in Michigan.   We need your ideas, your energy, and your shared commitment to fighting for change.

Your friend,
Jocelyn
