The Bay County Young Democrats will hold a kickoff event at 2 p.m. Sunday at the State Theatre in Bay City. The event is free and open to anyone interested in joining or supporting the activities of the group.

Pizza donated by State Rep. Jeff Mayes, D-Bay City, and a hosted concession stand will be provided. After a brief welcome from State Sen. Jim Barcia, D-Bay City, a free screening of the film Frost/Nixon will take place.

Group Chairman Spencer Tobias said he hopes people will come to see what the Young Dems are all about.

Tobias said he hopes to harness the power of peer-to-peer influence to spread the group's message, increase young voter registration and recruit volunteers. Using tools like Facebook, Twitter, e-mail and text messages, the group hopes to establish a strong grassroots network so to ensure a strong presence in the 2010 election cycle in Bay County.

Membership is open to those under age 36, and is not contingent upon joining the state or local party.

Meetings are held on the last Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m. Meeting location, membership and further information can be acquired by sending e-mail to youngdems@baycountydems.org.
