![]() Alma Wheeler Smith From the Ann Arbor News: State Rep. Alma Wheeler Smith, the long-time Ypsilanti-area Democrat, has announced that she is running for governor, according to a news release sent to The Ann Arbor News. "Michigan is at a critical crossroads and it is going to take legislative knowledge, political savvy and a lot of hard work to make sure we emerge from this recession a stronger, economically diverse and dynamic State," Wheeler Smith wrote on her campaign Web site, almaformichigan.com. "The current situation makes your involvement in this campaign crucial and I look forward to meeting all of you during the course of my candidacy." Smith, a former state senator and representative since 2004, with the growing field of candidates who want to succeed Gov. Jennifer Granholm, who will be term-limited out of running in 2010. She had said last fall that she might run for governor. Other candidates who have announced official bids for the Democratic nomination include, Lt. Governor John Cherry.
